Community Food Co-op
Melissa Elkins
Sustainability Coordinator & Administrative Assistant
Melissa started working at the Community Food Co-op, located in Bellingham, WA, in 1996 and has been the Co-op’s administrative assistant to the management team since 2008. In 2012, she added Sustainability Coordinator to her job title and started developing framework for tracking and creating sustainability initiatives within the organization. Since that time, the Co-op has published detailed annual sustainability reports, achieved LEED certification for their Cordata neighborhood store, become Energy Star® certified, and has been nationally recognized by the EPA as a Green Power leader for the last two years. She also mentors businesses and organizations on sustainability reporting, works with students from Western Washington University, and is currently working with the Bellingham organization Sustainable Connections to create a sustainability reporting mentor group that will be open to any regional business that is either interested in reporting or already is and would like support.
Voted Bellingham's best grocery store, the Community Food Co-op was founded in 1970. We are a full service grocery store and were the first grocery store north of Seattle to have a certified organic produce department. Everyone can shop, anyone can join.
