Year of the Woman:Two Women Make Big Impact in the Grocery Aisle with Their Small Business
Make better choices for your family and the environment in 2018 and join the NaturalCleaning Revolution!
MILWAUKEE (JANUARY 30, 2018) – The year 2018 has been heralded as the “Year of the Woman,” so there’s no bettertimethan the present to talk about the recent surge of women-owned businesses. Women have been increasing their presence in the world of small-business ownership in the last 20 years (Institute of Women’s Policy Research).
Rebel Green is just one example of a family-owned, Certified Woman-owned, small business that has been steadily growing in the last decade. It all began in 2008 when two moms – Ali Florsheim, an attorney and Melina Marcus, a former journalist–weren’t finding the natural household cleaners they were looking for, so they decided to startlooking into making their own.

As mothers of kids who suffer from allergies and skin sensitivities to chemicals in conventional cleaning products, Florsheim and Marcus launched Rebel Green in Milwaukee, Wis., and began developing a line of natural, eco-friendly cleaning products that were better for their families and the environment while at the sametimehighly effective with eye catching, shelf disruptive packaging. The pricing also had to be right in line with the that of conventional household cleaners in hopes they would encourage more people to make the switch to natural.
Rebel Green’s first product, launched in 2009 was Fruit & Veggie Clean, a produce washing solution with eye-catching packaging, superior ingredients and competitive pricing. It helps loosen dirt, pesticides and residues from fresh fruit and vegetables (as important as washing your hands, Florsheim and Marcus like to say). They set off to educate consumers, through product demos at grocery stores to show them why they needed the product, what it does and how to use it and a brand following was born. Customers and buyers across the country began asking for other Rebel Green natural household cleaners to clean their homes.
In 2016, Rebel Green embarked on a natural cleaning revolution and added a line of household cleaners, including USDA-certified organic laundry detergents, dish soap, all purpose spray, glass cleaner and hand soap. All are plant based, free of synthetic fragrances and sulfates, and the scented versions are made with essential oils, so they are gentle on sensitive skin but tough on messes. In 2017, the company introduced Tree Free Toilet Tissue and Tree Free Paper Towels, both of which reduce deforestation because they are made from soft and sustainable bamboo instead of trees. The pair knew the product had to be as soft as conventional or it would be a hard sell. They work to get the word out: if we all made the switch, we could save 27,000 trees a day cut down just to make toilet tissue. Thecompany purchases carbon credits for the tree free line so it is carbon neutral to offset environmental impacts of manufacturing and transportation. This effort goes toward helpingfamilies in developing countries suffering tremendously from air pollution caused by indoor cooking smoke. The #1 killer of children under five globally. Rebel Green supports social causes like Water.org, Feeding America, The Paradigm Project and the UWM School of Freshwater Sciences. The company enlists customers on it's mission.
“We strive to be stewards of our environment,” said Florsheim. “We want to do things differently by creating a culture of giving back – to our customers, to our environment and to those less fortunate – simply by doing the right thing.“As parents we know it’s something we have to teach our kids but we have to teach by example. When kids see their parents making ethical choices to consider the environment and give back, we’re building ideals for the next generation, says Marcus.Customers should know at the point of purchase what causes they're helping to support."
As Rebel Green has grown, Florsheim and Marcus have never lost sight of the family-owned company’s original mission. The two women even still taketimeto respond to customer inquiries themselves.
